    Hello,

I've got a maxim 650. Runs great, had no problems. Just recently though I haven't been able to get it to start with the starter. It turns over just fine, as it always has, but it just wont start. Luckily I live on a hill and it starts no problem if I roll it and let out the clutch, and it stays running sounding just as good as it always has, and no loss of power. Once the bike is warm it starts fine with the starter, so I'm thinking it may be a temperature thing? I live in Vancouver BC and it's been getting a little bit cooler and quite wet out lately, but it still seems odd to me. Any ideas as to what it could be, or suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Also my appologies if there's already a topic on this, I did search but didn't find anything.

    Thanks!

A lot of things can make it hard to start but not many that only cause that with the starter but not by coasting down a hill and when warm. The first thing that comes to mind is a weak battery. Then after that weak coils, cracked or damp coils or both.
If you are using the choke then maybe the starting jets are clogged.
My bike was always a bit hard to start unless the battery was fully charged but I fixed that by replacing the weak original coils with Accel coils. Now it will start fine if the battery is just strong enough to turn the engine over.

Battery would be the first thing to check. Carefully jump start the bike cold from a car battery. If the bike then starts you have found the problem. Also check for loose or corroded connections and alternator brushes lenght and output (at battery with multimeter).

Do you have spark on all the plugs while the engine is being cranked over?

Three things (basic) needed for combustion:

    Fuel mixture
    Compression
    Spark

With our dirt bikes (high performance four strokes) when you can't get it to start by kicking it and it can be bump started it often indicates low compression due to one or more valve clearances going to zero. Might be something to check if you're getting GOOD spark and fuel.
