PROGRESSIVE FRONT FORK SPRINGS

    im looking to install a set of progressive fork springs, but i cant find em cheaper than $75 bucks.... does anyone know where to get em cheaper? or maybe a different bike will fit mine? ____'82 xj650j maxim.

    Cheaper than that? Hell I didn't even know you could find them THAT cheap!
    I think I paid $100 for mine... plus shipping.

    Only $75 or $100 for new forks?? My mechanic said it would be $140 to replace the seals on it...why don't I just buy new forks??

    $75 is a good price. I'm not aware of anything cheaper and, IMHO, you ought to swing for them. You'll be glad you did.

    Experience has shown that rarely does one need "new' springs there are other issues like rebound and dampening that are far more significant to handling.
    Bottoming is Not usually a spring problem
    However IF yr just too Heavy :) Sag issues...a bigger preload spacer does the trick nicely and can be DIY'd from a suitable diameter piece of PVC plumbing tube. Replacing springs or adding a spacer should take no more than 5 mins per fork tube..( they come out the top.. No disassembly required Kids)
    Partsnmore.com charges $10 for a pair of Seals (reasonable Japanese quality too)

    well im not TOO heavy. 6'1" 155lbs fit.... BUT I replaced all my seals and such, I am sure the springs are worn. I can tension them with my pinky 8O ..... :?




    75 is good then, theyll be on order!

    I don't have the luxury of a new set of springs, and mine felt a little down.

    After reading Danilo's post, and consulting my mechanic, i proceeded to install coins under the spacer, but our 20cent coin is a tad too big to fit in my tube.
    I made up some alloy disks to fit inside [about 30mm high] and the difference is incredible.

    A low cost solution that should get me there till i find the coin to go a new set.

    Rob is absolutely correct, one very cost effective way to "breathe new life" into old springs is to increase their preload a bit.

    That being said, Progressive Suspension fork springs are a GREAT improvement, even over new stock springs.

    I've done a back-to-back comparison: My two 550 Secas. Both have new seals. Both have the same fork oil (Bel-Ray 15W.) One bike has a set of virtually new stock springs; I upgraded the other with Progressives.

    The difference is remarkable, in road holding, ride quality and braking.

    I plan to upgrade the springs in the other bike the next time I change the fork oil. MORE THAN worth it. Highly Recommended, X2.

    $75 is a good price BTW. What's Len getting?

    Yep they do sag over time, mine would drop to the bottom without air to hold the front up. Got new Progressives from Chacal and don't even run air now, great, doesn't dive under braking now, much better ride. Save your pennies and get a set.

    Adding more preload is a band aid fix at best

    Has anyone ever done a proper set up measuring sag and then selecting a appropriate spring rate?

    Which springs on that page are the right ones? I just got my XJ a couple weeks back and the front dives harder then a f-18 hornet.

    Im a big guy so im looking to beef up my front and rears. Im 6'1" 275lb's.

    If its under $100 then i might as well change the springs while im in there doing the fluid and seals.

    I put New Progressive Springs in my 900.

    The Springs came with a Recommended Preload for various Makes and Models.

    Some of the early XS Models came with Factory Variable Front Fork Preload.
    I had variable Preload on the '79 650 Special.

    I'm gonna try the band-aid until I can get new progressives, which end do the spacers go in(top of spring or below)?
