Just came in to introduce myself. I currently have 1 thread & 1 post. So im pretty new. I found this site threw some searching to pick up information on my recent purchase, which is a 1982 Maxim 550. I bought it lastnight and got a amazing deal on it due to a bad oil leak. I figure i'll go threw the engine change all the gaskets, seals, and bearings, along with rebuilding the starter and such to get it running better then it did in 82. Then to make it a bit faster port and polish the head, rejet the carbs, open the exhaust, and maybe some juice.

So you know a little of my intensions, So you imput?

    Again Whats up everyone?

Before you try to make it "faster", make it leak free and running properly & smoothly and see how fast it can be.

Its not a 150MPH crotch rocket, and don't expect it to be.

PM Chacal with purchase requests and general questions about parts if you can't find it directly in a forum post.

That 550 will be nimble and quick but it is no speed racer. You can build a great little bike out of those for reasonable coin, just be sure to shop with Chacal before you take a poke anywhere else. I think he'll be about the best price, heaven knows he is the fastest shipping...

You don't have to change all the gaskets and seals to stop an oil leak. Just figure out where is it leaking from. Wash the bike, ride it for a few and puff baby powder around the leak to determine where it is coming from.

I just wanted to replace everything to get it in tip top shape. It came with a seal that is surposed to be the reason for the massive leak. ill have to check it out.

Here it is y'all Its the best I could get being in storage. But it isnt bad concidering the price I got it for. I have the windshield off.

The plans are to build a Bobber. So most of the parts may be up for sale soon.

Is that a "stock" style paint job on the tank?

I'd like something like that when I paint/repair mine.

ok, so, going against the purists

you can get this bike to 150 mph, since you plan and are able to tear apart the engine.

you need an older fz600 86-87 ish pistons, cylinder, head, carbs, they'll drop right on, you can get a lil better ignotion, you can do your pornt n polish, better valve springs, cam work, though a fz600 motor may just drop in, need clarification on that.

secondly, not stock paint on tank, looks like white painted over the stock paint, looks good though.

also, seca 550 cams are hotter than max 550

is your rear rim a 16? shafti max's are 16, secas are 18, may apply to chain drivers, also, seca front end is twin disc, or go all out and put a fz600 front end on, much better.

if you're going bobber, PLEASE, buy yourself a universal weld on hard tail and do it the right way, looks much better and cleaner than the stock swingarm

and of course if ya got 800 buring a hole in your pocket, CR carbs are always nice

Im not looking into going all that fast I sold the GSX-R's because that reason. 135 mph on a wheelie, and runs to 180 mph kinda put a urgent" WTF am I doing" in your head. I'll be happy to cruise with my buddies around 90-110 max. But a nice fun reliable bike is what im looking for.

As for the bobber I will be usin a stretched ridgid frame, with a coffin tank, and different rear fender. So most stock parts will be removed.
