Pulled the rear tire yesterday, here are the photos with some questions attached.

Is the smell of gear oil and brown sludge normal when pulling the rear axle? I was not expecting such a strong smell and so much brown oil as the axle doesn't actually drive anything.

How do these look? I am going to clean the hub out, might want to just replace the shoes anyways they could be original, any suggestions?

Look good? A lot of heavy black grease in teeth.

The axle has gease on it so that it does not corrode to the bore and bcome irremovable.

Unless you know the age of the brake shoes, fit new ones.

Grease is on the splines to cushion them and prevent corrosion. Without it, the splins would become damaged quickly.

Clean off all the old grease, and replace with new waterproof moly grease.
