    Urgent !

Changed all bulbs to the same one, right hand flashes fine, left hand the front is a solid light and the back doesnt come on at all

Tried different bulbs and even checked for voltage at both front and back and was fine

What wattage are the bulbs? The system calls for 27 Watts per bulb.

The self-canceling unit can sometimes fail, causing the same sysmtoms. It is located under the gas tank. Long, rectangular and black. Unplug it to check. You can run with it unplugged, just remember to calcel your signals manually.

I didn't think it had a self cancelling unit? They're working now. It was the connection between bulb and holder

Glad they are working. The whole XJ series have self-canceling turn signals.

Pretty much, though it works differently.
The signal cancels after a combination of time and distance.

Gotcha, I cant say I've noticed though.

Am I correct in saying that they are on some sort of wind up coil that needs to reset itself? Or am 8 I just making things up ha ha

So followed your instructions however I feel like I have the cable in the correct place.

I got out of bed and took this quick video as I'll only have chance to alter the routing just before work in the morning

cable goes through a wire holder on the upper fork bracket bolt then under the top bracket between headlight bracket and fork tube down frame over coils and then goes between frame and harness to carbs. looks like what you have in video.

do not forget to adjust the cable at throttle and lube cable

Thanks, would the cable need lube even though its brand new?

I've been out this morning and as you said my routing seems fine so I've slackened off the adjuster nut and I now seem to be ok turning side to side

Questions galore here.... can a muffler restrict the air flow and cause the bike to bog down?

Possibly. You appear to have Sportster mufflers, and those typically cause no problems when used on an XJ.

Thanks k-moe and thanks to everyone who has helped! The bike passed its MOT and I've had it on the open road.

It pulls like a train and sounds awesome.

I had an issue with it bogging down this morning when I took it the MOT garage and the mechanic took one look at it and said the engine was suffocating. He took the mufflers off and told me they were clogged up.

Once he'd cleaned it up and removed some of the inner stuffing its ran spot on

So I've just put about 50 miles on it and I'm in love.

I do however think I need to invest in a windshield as anything from 60mph onwards wants to take me off of the bike!

    1) how easy would a universal windshield fit? I've never touched one let alone fit one on a bike.

    2) the headlight has stopped working however the bulb hasn't blown - it's still got a sealed beam. The retaining clip has broken free of its spot weld connections so I'm looking to upgrade to halogen. Any recommendations/directions to follow?

    3) does anyone know the diameter of the xj650 maxim fork? I imagine I need new brackets for the new headlight

    New day new problem

Today I went on a nice ride out up in the Yorkshire Dales and did approx 164 miles of riding. Through the ride I noticed that if i gave 3/4 to full throttle that the bike would bog down until it got enough speed and would then tear through the gear as expected. On top of this the bike bogs at around 65mph and wont go past 6k revs in 5th gear.

My friend behind me said that when I went to put some power down that there was sometimes a puff of (black?) Smoke. He had his sunglasses on so couldn't really tell.

The carbs have been fully stripped, cleaned (church level clean) and put back together. Every thing in there works as it should- I changed the fuel o rings and the butterfly shaft seals.

The bike was color tuned and then vacuum synced using a morgan tuner - all sparks seemed good and the vacuum gauge gave an equal reading.

I tried to re tune after the ride and it made a tiny improvement - I got to 70! But it won't go past this.

Are there any suggestions out there?

    Many thanks

    Edit:
Sparks 1 and 2 look carbon fouled and 3 and 4 look as they should
