How do you guys put the XJ650 on a bike jack? I have a jack I use on my V-Star and the old T350 Suzuki I am restoring, but with the exhaust going under the XJ I dont see how to use it unless I remove the exhaust. Its hard for me to get down low to work on mine with my back surgery so would be nice to get it in the air on the jack so I could get easier access but if I have to take off the exhaust, seems like more trouble then its worth.. Is there a way you guys use blocks on the jacks or do you just not jack it up???

Another way if ya have room is make a ramp , and a elevated bike bench as in some workshops.

Yea, a ramp and an elevated bench would work, but right now I am not able to push it up a ramp. When I bought the bike, had to have someone load it for me. At my house I have a ditch I back the truck into and puts the tailgate level with the ground, thats how I got it off.. LOL For right now I am not supposed to lift over 10 pounds and am not supposed to bend. Already breaking the "bending" rule with what I have done so far to the bike, but I can sure tell it afterwards when the back starts hurting agian... Trying to avoid as much of that as possible, hate the thought of having to go back under the knife cause I was being stupid and working on the bike when I shouldnt have been..... but its extremely boring sitting around the house not being able to do anything....

Make up a set of frame adapters to mate the frame to the jack. Dwayne Verhey did it with some welding and such so he can use a jack on his FJR, and they work for other bikes like the XJ's too.

The other choice would be some wood blocks to go around the exhaust I would think....

Sounds like a frame adaptor is in order. Unless you can weld it yourself, your going to have to bribe your welding buddy (or pay the local shop) to create one for you. Heed your doc's advice, your back isn't something you want to risk!

Your right, after 5 hours of surgery and everything I have gone through since, I sure dont want to mess it up. Got two titanium rods in my back now, so once it all heals up, I should be strong as an ox!! LOL One of the members here is going to come by one day this week and help me check it out anyways, so I am just going to be patient and wait for him.

I'd pop in if it were humanly possible. It would cause me some distress to hear that you set your self back (no pun intended) another 6 months! Hope our brother can get you hooked up. If not, spring the cash and have the local shop make an adaptor for your needs. Then photograph and post it! I'd love to see what it looks like.

I doubt that very much , there is aslo a style of bike bench that has a scissor lift raising system , go cruise around the bike workshops and look , or pick another hobby.

Pick another hobby?? nawww, this isnt a hobby, its called "trying to get the wife's bike running properly". I been wrenchin all my life and always wrench on my own stuff. This back problem is just a minor set back. Evveryone I have talked to that has had the surgery has done fine afterwards, so I will be able to do everything I did before once it heals up..

My hobby is sailing, hiking, camping, and bike riding.

Passion! This is no mere hobby my good man, it is a life altering experience! It trancends pain and anguish. This is one of those things you feel in your soul! Right after my surgery, first thing I asked the doc was will I be able to ride again? This is in my blood, no sense giving it up if I hurt a little bit. I feel lousy if I don't ride, gotta have my fix.

When I have to bring one of my bikes into the Pits ... I set-up my special "Workin' On The Bike Rig"

The sheet of plywood provides just enough insulation from the chill of the garage floor -- to say so.

A folded, old, "Standard Issue, Olive Drab, Blanket, US" adds another layer of protection from the cold cement.

An old sleeping-bag, with a few duct-taped patches, goes on, next. Layered protection against the cold and the itchy blanket.

Finally, a large, old, bright-yellow, beach towel. Let's me have a soft top cover to drop the tools on, wipe my hands on, clean a part with and find what I dropped on it easily; while I'm flat on my back trying to work under, or kneeling to do something else on my bike.

I just take a couple of pre-wrenching Advil's and hope I don't strain my back again.

Not to change the subject, but back pain is a bitch.
I'm trying to rid myself of it without much luck so far.
3 shots in the spine and theropy.
Not sure how it's going to turn out.
My doc has mentioned disk replacements.
2 of them, which is still in the trial stage.
Everytime I go back he asks, hows your quality of life now.
    Gives me shivers.
    OK. back to bikes. :D

All this back talk.... gotta add my two cents.... ( not worth much being Cdn funds )

I lived with back problems since 1975. Every winter I would be laid up for at least a week, not able to move. Went to every person/doctor/quack that I could find with no relief. Finally in 1990 I blew a disk and lost all muscle/nerves in my left leg. Had surgery just over a month later and haven't had any real problem since. I'm left with nerve damage in left leg but that's a very minor inconvenience. When I asked why the surgery wasn't done prior to the major blow out, doc said "because I always recovered within a week or so of the problem".

carsonschaos , don't know how old ya is , but try to imagine if backpain is still going to be there in 20years [ya never know] what will be used then to alleiviate the symptoms , and try not to go assuming "ther'yl be a fix by then" .
what i am getting at , the stuff used now over the years will have a less gradual effect needing more ect ect until?.

1 honest doctor after seeing many over here looked me straight in da eyes and said to me "Don't let them touch you , we really don't know what we are doing yet" scared me he did , not scared as in scared but the thought of the organisation being what it was and me trusting "yes we can fix that" saga.

A fusion was being thought of at the time , no disc down at the bottom years ago , and over the years i have seen some poor wrecks out here that had been experimented on , seriously sorry stuff.

I listened to that dude , he was so honest , his next advice was , "Put up with it for as long as you can , do no more than that" , 1986.

Tis why i laugh/shudder at the same time at one of the guys here [only his moniker not him] ya seen it , the spinalator :)

I'm in a similar boat. 4 herniated disks, osteoarthritis and scoliosis, I'm on borrowed time. Doc said that I should hold out as long as possible before considering surgery. Pain would pop up about once a week and knock me on my back for two or three days. I'd get up and be fine. Couldn't figure it out until they did an MRI on my lower back. Top off that both hip joints have degenerative osteoarthritis and I'm in fine shape (mom claims it is from a misspent youth, I'm not in agreement). This causes me to approach maintenance from a different perspective than in years past. Don't lift if I can avoid it (own a few hoists now). Rig up jigs to lift stuff or enlist help from the neighbors. Ounce of prevention keeps me out of bed and working!

I have degenerative disc, 2 years ago, one blew out. They did surgery, cutting the hernieated disc and trimming the bone. That was good to go for 6 months, then it all started again. Doc told me that with my disc, my best option was fusion. He said it wasnt neccesary at the time, but I would know when it was. Fast forward to this past July. Brought a piece of equipment off the hill, was a rough ride and bounced me pretty good. That weekend we took out bike for a 400 mile road trip. got down to our destination and I could hardly move. Went to the hospital down there and got a shot. Next day we came home. Was able to ride just fine, but was having trouble getting my feet back up on the floor boards.. Got home, got some meds and relaxed, but didnt get any better. Doc was right, I knew it was time to do something.. Aug 11th, had my fusion done. Pain wise, it feels great! I still am not supposed to bend or lift, but am getting around great. No leg pain, very little back pain. Now just wanting to get back to work... its boring sitting around the house all day..
