I have swapped out the dash on my '82 XJ750 with an acewell unit, and replaced the front turn signals with leds. With the bike in idle around 1000-1100rpm (with illuminated dash and running lights on), the voltage sits at approximately 12.8v, but when I use the turn signal, it drains the battery and the signals stop working around 12v. I have 25w6ohm resistors on the signals. There are no other constant drains on the battery besides the led dash, led running lights and headlight. Maybe the Idle rpm is set too low?Any Ideas on how to correct this would be greatly appreciated.

Our bike's generators start working around 1800-2000 rpms (don't set idle that high).

With the resistors your battery will drain.

Need resistors to activate flasher... lower watt resistor perhaps?
Or different flasher relay (don't need auto cancel).

This one off eBay works great. Extra wire goes to ground. No autocancel though.

Excuse my idiocy, does this mean if i get one of these new relay boxes I can ditch the resistors and lessen the load?

Picked up a flasher on the way home today, worked perfectly! Didn't even remove the resistors and still no battery drain! Thanks guys.

    Test:

    Charging System Output
    Measured at Battery.

    +14.2 ~ +14.5VDC @ 2000rpm's and above.

Below +14.2VDC -or- Above +14.8VDC Require immediate troubleshooting.

    Inspect:

Alternator Brushes and Alternator Rotor Face.

    • Brushes. 10mm Limit. 10mm -or- below = Replace Brushes.

    * Rotor. Clean Brushes Orbit Paths with Typewriter Eraser.

would the LED flasher still be needed if you are running a set of led turns AND a set of regular bulb signals?

the set I bought for the rear of my bike I can't seem to find in the standard bulb anymore. I found an LED set that look identical but i'm trying to figure out what I will need to do to make them work.

This does work like a charm. I was hesitant at first thinking there had to be more to it. Nope.

I havent really delve into the electronics pond with this xj650J yet, but I understand the electronics are pretty weak. I planned on replacing the fuse box. Would switching to LED be a good move as far as taking some load off the system? I think it would, but would like another opinion.
    Thanks

Leds are absolutely a great way to take some of the load off the system. Replacing the fuse box and cleaning up all of the connectors is also a good idea to get your electrical system working better.

Keep in mind very few and no cheap led blinkers are DOT approved.

Also many LED assemblies are not as bright/visible during the daytime.

That being said pricey assemblies can be very bright. Those usually are $50+ each unlike $5 ebay bulbs.

Another thing always buy color matched bulbs NOT white for use behind a color lens.

I tried a couple different LED turn signals when I wanted to put vintage aftermarket hard bags on my Seca. None were close to bright enough in daylignt. I got very lucky and found a second bike with both the factory luggage and the relocated turn signals to go with it.
