I picked up this 1996 535 Virago off Craigs List a few weeks ago for cheap with a broken rocker are in the rear head. Easy fix, I got a good head off Ebay for 40$ with cam and rockers. Installed them and it runs great. After a week of detail cleaning and polishing this is what I ended up with. So far the total investment is less that 350$(bike,tire,battery,gaskets)

My question; There is a plug from the wiring harness hanging right above the carbs. What is it and where does it go? There is nothing in the vacinity that looks like it will fit into.

Could it be for the fuel pump? On the schematic it shows the pump with a two wire plug, i originally thought it was for the fuel gauge but it doesn't seem to have one.

Could the PO have installed just a normal fuel tap which didn't need a pump?

+1 if he did! I was thinking maybe part of the safety system (ie. kickstand switch, etc.). I've done a lot of work on the 500 but not that familiar with the 535 but I would start with those 2. Good luck!

Its a mystery to me. The fuel pump hooks under the seat and there is no fuel light or gauge. The pump is needed because the main tank is under the seat. The false tank on top is just for filling. Side stand saftey is wired and working. The harnes look original with no modifications. I got this from the original owner and he is not the type of person who could modify anything.
I was thinking it was for some accessory that was not installed on the bike.

Bike look's nice. Maybe the plug is for a gauge or low fuel warning light, that's my guess. Dave should know.

Mlew is the broken rocker a common problem with the Virago's? I am looking at one and the guy just told me that it has a 'knock' coming from the back cylinder. Sound familiar or is this more likely bottom end?

As to your 2 wire plug, based on the location it seems like it connected something up top. What about the clutch safety switch? Maybe its for an emission component that is gone. You could trace the wire and see where it goes.

MercuryMan; I would say that valve train problems are common with all Virago's . This one had a broken arm, I got a 1982 920 Virago last year for 250$ with similar problems. Nice thing is you don't need to remove the head to replace the cam or rocker arms.
Everything works on the bike even the sidestand and clutch switches. Nothing I can find doesn't work . I'll have to look through the wiring diagram again to see if I can find anything about that plug. Its just irritating me not knowing what it is.
