I am interested in replacing the stock rear shocks on my '82 XJ750 Maxim, and I'm curious about replacements.
    1. Other than length and weight range, what are the differences between different shocks regarding fitment? For instance, will a shock designed for a Harley Sportster fit my XJ?
    2. What is the standard shock length on my bike?
    3. What brand aftermarket shock have you tried? Opinions?
Thanks for your input- and, I hope everyone here gets a chance to get out and have some fun this weekend. Looks to be hot and muggy here in the Atl-

    Lets see here...
1 - biggest difference is the mountings - some don't have eyes on both sides, and the size of the bushings in the eyes on each end for those that do. Harley shocks will fit, but you'll need to get new bushings as Harley's use a different size.
2 - standard shock length should be 12.5"
3 - I actually haven't tried any yet - though I'm pretty much looking to go with a set of Harley take-offs.... they're pretty heavy duty and well constructed. Progressive shocks are really good no matter what model you go with ($$). As I remember, someone here got a set of the replacements from JC Whitney and said they were not bad....

Anyone else have opinions here - what you got, what you like/dislike about them. My 650 has rusty springs and dead dampers - it's time!

harley Dyna-glide shocks are made by Shawa, right length wrong bushing dia.
the springs on the dyna shocks are way way too stiff but originals fit
    price was right on ebay
don't worry about 1/4 inch or so in length, a lot of people can't read a tape
