I'm looking into getting my first bike and saw a listing for a 83' xj900rk seca. The price on it is very reasonable and looks to be in decent condition. However, in the listing the seller says it needs it's carbs rebuilt and it's missing second gear, but he has the parts. The work itself isn't something I'm worried about, but I am wondering if there is anything else I should be worried about or look out for with this bike?[IMG]

Starter drive chain is the Achilles heel. If you're taking it apart to repair the gearbox, may as well replace the starter drive bits while you're there.

it is a costly repair when done between gaskets, new starter clutch and chain guide if your going in that deep you want to replace those parts when your in there.

no second gear could be a simple fix but you will not know untill you open up the motor

I would not recomend a seca 900 as a first bike. maybe start with a 650 untill you develope your riding skills you will have just as much fun.
650 is a little lighter just a tad slower in the 1/4 mile and still top ends at 120
as far as the coolness factor the 900 wins. but as a one year bike parts can be a little diffucult to find where the 650 was built for 4 years.
