    First the facts -
'81 Seca 750 ridden for 3 years on a "weak" but livable clutch. (47K)
    Four parts bikes.
'82 Seca 750 parts bike had 20K. Disassemble, lightly clean, measured several spots on the friction material with a micrometer, both good and bad, within 0.0015 , reassemble using all easily removed parts, and decided to use both sets of the 5 washers just to give the springs more "bite".

And I get absolutely nothing !! As if there's no clutch in there at all.
Why did this not work at all?? :?:

Maybe the actuator didn't get re-installed in the correct position?
Where'd ya install the extra washers?
On top or bottom of the springs?

I would think they'd have to be below the spring to add any tension.
On top the washer is going to stop at the spring post where the bolt goes in isn't it?

I think Richard got it-- your "extra" washers have something bound up, or something's amiss with the actuator mechanism.

You did put the correct number of plates back in, right?

OK - so the washer stops at the post neither adding or subtracting from spring tension, just "shortening" the bolt.

I didn't actually count the plates - I used the whole stack, all plates kept in order.

"Plan A" was to use the Turbo 650 clutch complete (only 2,400 miles) but that requires removing the whole basket. I'm going back in.

A few years ago I tried the washer under the spring on a CB900F. Seemed to work ok, but the springs were still weak and I ended up replacing them and the plates. I used copper washers I found at ACE Hardware that would fit into the bottom of the pressure plate squarely.

Well, removed the 5 extra washers, inspected, noticed 2 "pips"
re-assembled with pips aligned, and it works ! Test drive felt good.
Rode in 2nd gear and flared the clutch a couple times, it caught well,

    I'm calling it fixed.

Dots that need to be aligned, when reassembling the pressure plate to the stack:

Bill; Tell ya what. I've been working on a how-to, "Clutches 101" that isn't quite finished yet. I have a couple more pictures to add; and I was going to wait and tear into my 650 first also, so I could include some pics of a "normal" clutch. (The 550 has some "differences" that aren't a consideration on the bigger bikes.)

Here's a link to the Photobucket gallery for the clutch how-to. http://s437.photobucket.com/albums/qq93 ... hes%20101/ Like I said, incomplete but you might learn some stuff.
