Has anyone ever used these clip ons? Or does anyone know if they will fit? I have a 1981 XJ650 Maxim and want to install some clip ons. I found some off of a 2006 R1 here locally. Any info would be great.

You have to factor in the upper diameter of the R1 tubes. I think they are on the order of 50mm which is much bigger then the diameter of the XJ650 which iirc are 36mm.

Basically it's not going to work. You have to search from donor bikes that have the same 36mm size.

Edit: There's a fork tube diameter chart floating on the web, you can search for that to find compatible bikes!

I don't mean to thread jack but I must ask...

Samson: Why is your tank paint job so textured? I am asking because it kind of resembles bed liner. I'm intrigued. I was planning to do my bike in a bed liner....

that's exactly what it is, Rhinoliner. I did it in flat-black initially, but it looked unfinished, not to mention rocks could easily chip it. Since I wanted a rugged, almost industrial look, truck bed liner seamed like a good choice. I still have to do the tail, fender, and side panels in it.

I got them second hand, but they sell these on ebay for around $80.
just have to make sure they fit 36mm forks.

    P.S.
Because of where the mounting bolts are on these clip-ons (facing the rear), you can not mount them under the triple tree because they will hit the gas tank... just something to keep in mind.

another question for samson - do you have a better pic or description on how you lowered/mounted your gauges? Thats the look i'm going for as well.

I didn't take a lot of pictures of the mounting bracket,
but I pretty much just cut out a mounting plate out of aluminum,
drilled some holes for the gauge bowls, indicator lights and mounting points,
rhinolined it, and used chromoly spacers to offset it.

    P.S.
If you do this, you will need new headlight mounting brackets in order to move the headlight down a few inches.
