I just found this website a little while ago, hope I didn't post this in the wrong place.

Anyhow, I have a rare 1984 XJ750RL as the title says, only made for 1984, only 800 made, Canada got 600, the Auzzies got the rest. Mine has been done up custom a bit, and I love it to death. HOWEVER! I said I would only give it up if I found a big 4 cyl. Triumph or Ducati (Except I only like the $50000+ Ducati's, of course, so that is out), and well, I found a Triumph I love! A 1994 Daytona 1200 in Pimento Red. The owner wants $4000 for the Triumph, and will trade his bike for mine plus $2500. I don't want to do that too badly, I know my bike is worth more then $1500. What does this forum think my bike is worth? I would like to see if I could sell my bike (My heart skips a beat when I type that, but it skips 2 knowing that SOMEONE ELSE could have that Triumph).

I guess some important points to note:
    - Was completely rebuilt a number of years ago, don't really know why I did, it was quite nice before, but anyhow it was (This was at about 30000km)
    - 41000km now
    - Professionally painted a Metallic Yamaha R6 Blue
    - Custom Mike Corbin seat (I have 2 for this bike actually)
    - Meticulously maintained. Oil changes every 2000km, battery removed every winter, replaced every few years, stored with a full tank of gas and stabilizer in the tank, stored in a heated garage, never slept outside.
    - Rubber is good, lots of tread left

What are your thoughts on the bike, pricing, etc. Any ideas for what I should do is appreciated.

    Thanks!

This looks a realy nice bike if I lived near you I recon i would be around your place now with $1500 I have a 83 that looks very similar but standard paint and a few Mods I would buy your bike and keep mine for spares. I recon you could ask 3K for it here in OZ easy. By the way does anybody know if you can get a replacement widsheild for that fairing.

Very nice! If it's half as nice in the metal as it is in the photos, it should be worth more than $1500. I'd say $2000 easy for a quick sale or if you have to sell it in the winter, maybe as much as $3000 if you were selling in the spring and found the right buyer.

I'm tempted to offer to trade my 2000 Triumph Trophy 1200 - but probably not, because a Triumph and an XJ make a great pair. Keep both if you can! But be careful, multiple bike ownership is a slippery slope as many people on this site can attest.

    Thanks Adrial1

Obviously I did not look hard enough. I tried to make one myself out of perspex and a hair dryer but snapted the perspex in the proccess so I ended up making one out of a piece of thin aluminium as a temporary fix it work ok but looks crap.

I like the Trophy 1200's as well, if one came up I would consider trading for it probably. I prefer the Daytona though, sportier. Yes, if I could I would keep both, never in a million years would you find another XJ750RL quite like this one. But then again, there were only 25, 1994 Daytona 1200's imported into Canada, the guy with the one I want has papers for it. I have seen some in the states though, the odometer reading they state in miles, but I don't know if the gauges are actually in miles as well. I couldn't stand it if they were. Driving around with imperial in a metric country. That and if I had a nice Pimento Red Daytona, I would feel the need to someday down the road ship it to Italy and take a few months and tour Italy on bike, or Europe in general, and again, imperial bike in a metric country I have never driven in before would be a pain.

There is a good question for you! Do you know if Triumph bikes are all in metric (km) or if some of the ones imported to the states are imperial (miles)?

I have never owned more then 1 bike at a time, this is actually only my second bike, so what is the problem with multiple bike ownership? Favoritism? I bought a scuffed up 1987 Yamaha FZ750 Genesis to learn on, I loved it, it was a land missile. I sold it (Kinda wished I hadn't, would have been cool all fixed up to showroom quality), and used the money to buy this, which someone else started as a project. I bought it thinking, finish it and sell it for more, make some money off it, but I fell for it. I loved what the guy had started doing as soon as I got it home and was looking at the parts. So I finished it the way he started, got it painted and everything, and damn, it turned out amazingly. The guy was an artist actually, and he loved motorcycles, but had a kid so the bike had to go. And I must say, his artistic ability and love of motorcycles mixed perfectly.

By the way, I haven't had any cash offers, but I have had some interesting trade offers, a 20 foot speed boat and and mid 90's Skyline. I wouldn't use a boat, and boats are bad bets, and I only like British sports cars and american muscle.

I do have some of that protective edging stuff they use in cars covering the top of it so it would not cut as clean as a bare metal edge, but thanks I had not throught about this aspect of using aluminium plate better get on to buying a new plastic one.

That would also be the same windshield as the 83 XJ900R fork mount fairing. You can get one through our resident parts supplier XJ4ever.

Not quite that rare. That is 1983, this is 1984. Did they make fuel injected ones for 1984 as well? Also, its fuel injected and only has 70hp? Mine is supposed to be rated for 87hp. Aren't you usually supposed to get more power out of fuel injection then carbed? Haha!

One thing I must say about both bikes, usually the Yamaha Red and White paint jobs look really good, but they look kind of awful on these bikes. I think its because its kind of a grey instead of white. I mean my first bike looked awesome with the original paint:

Glad I had this one painted blue. You can't go wrong with a nice solid blue or red.

Yeah, gotta love red/white yammies. I explicitly sought one of the earlier FJ's because after '87, a number of things changed, including the red/white paint job.

And take that site's specs with a grain of salt, especially on rare bikes. It might be 70 rear wheel and yours might be 87 theoretical, also.

I think I'd like to get an old FZ one day. They seem like great bikes.

As far as your trade value, 1500 is probably the low end of reasonable. For a trade, I'd be looking for the high end of reasonable. I imagine it'd be hard to get 2100 in most places, but if you are patient and savvy, you might pull off a bit more with the right buyer. Put it on CL for 2150 and see who bites. You don't have to sell it, just gauge response. You can even put it in a different city's CL so you don't have problems with the bike appearing twice, later with a higher price.

    Best of luck!
