So yesterday I took my 82 xj650 tank down to bare metal, etched primer then 3 coats of primer dry for four hours.
Wet sanded with 400 grit wiped it with isopropyl three times and then 4 coats of gloss black. IMO it came out amazing. I could never been able to get this barn find to this point without the knowledge people on this site relay. Thanks I will let it cure for a week or two as I just ordered the mk clear coat. Now I have to figure out if I am going to wet sand with 2000 or not before cc

I would wet sand it to get rid of the pebble look. Starting with 400 will be fine, but then move gradually to 2000 or more. The same with the clear coat, and don't overdue the clear coat.

I am almost done with a 78 xs650. I did the side panels first and I wet sanded the paint before doing 2K (red button 2 part mix) clear coat.
I was amazed how well the clear coat came out. I wet sanded the paint. If you have any rough spots, you will notice it when you clear coat.
CC came out so good, I did not even polish it.
Take a flashlight and shine it from the side to look for imperfections. Once you clear coat, you would have to strip it all the way back down to fix it.

You will be shocked by how much better that will look after sanding. Don't be afraid to dive in. It is intimidating at first and you will think you have ruined it after the first few strokes, but trust the progression of grits.

I just finished clearmax 2K coating my XS650 tank.
I got some splatter on coat 3 and now will have to sand/polish out the clear coat. I got away w/ not having to do this on the side panels.

Next time I paint, I'm getting a setup for my compressor, I'm done with rattle cans.

I'm 58 :) and last rattle can painted bikes/ motorcycle in my youth and they turned out looking like a teenager did it :)

Needing to invest in the equipment is definitely a hurdle. I have an El-cheapo spray gun that I've attempted small projects. Didn't like the results, but was that the equipment or my complete lack of skill? The rattle cans are nice, but dang the cost adds up quick.

Just finished the rattle can and max 2k clear coat this weekend. Came out pretty good not professional but wanted to dress up this barn find xj650. Was a lot of fun and learned a lot.
