I have a rattle in the right handlebar and it seems to be coming from the throttle grip area. I can't find a diagram showing what's in there and what might be causing the rattle. It generally only happens when I hit a bump. The throttle and cables all seem to work well. Anyone have a diagram or tell me what I need to look for?

I don't have a diagram but I know when I took my throttle grip apart when I lubed the throttle cable, a few pieces of plastic fell out. I'm assuming it was a few pieces broken off the throttle tube. Your rattle might be the same thing.

It could be that (the throttle tube), or the nub of the grip cap. There's nothing inside of the bars otherwise. I suppose it could be that the inside of your bars got rusty and a fleck of rust broke free.

Some handlebars have welded steel tube "weights" inside the ends of the bars, if the spot-weld breaks loose, the weight will rattle around.......

So how do I get the end cap off to take a look? It acts like it is hooked to a spring that's holding it in.

I found something very interesting inside my handle bars when I replaced them. There was a hand full of nuts and bolts inside.:eek:

Well, since you asked, I decided to pull the end cap out a little to see what it was hooked to, and lo and behold it simply pops in and out of the rubber grip. Dud! But there definitely is something inside and when I pushed it with a small screwdriver it moved about an inch and stopped. I can't tell if it is plastic or not, but it is circular and slides easily.

I forgot about the bar end weights (I am not running stock bars). That's probably (I'd say exactly, but you know how assumptions go) what it is. Chacal for the win.

You;ll have to remove the switchgeear and throtttle tube to get at it. I"d epoxy it back into place instead of welding it (just for ease of doing the job without damaging the finish of the bars).

you might try to loosen the bar clamps and slide the bars to the left, loosen the switches and throttle tube and slide them off to the right. sometimes it works sometimes not

Or fire a shot of expanding foam insulation in each end to dampen the vibration and hold the whatever in place.

The bar end weights are solid plugs. That might not secure it; though the exapnding foam is not a bad idea. I filled my EMGO bars with butyl caulk and that helped reduce vibration a bit.

If I can remove the grip, and I'm not sure how to do that and not destroy them, then it would seem that I could loosen the handle bar grips and then turn them down and let it drop out. I really don't want to destroy the grips.

If it's the right side (brake lever side), the grip actually fits onto a hard plastic "tube" that slides off the bars once the "spool" that it on the end of the plastic tube (which lives inside the control switch housing) is released.......which you release by removing the screws that cinch together the upper and lower shells of the control switch. Once you can get access to that spool, you can release the throttle cable from the spool, and then the tube and the grip (with a little prompting) will just slide off the end of the bars, and now you have access to that end of the bars (and the bar weight).

If it's the left lide (clutch lever side), then it gets tricky..............removing the grip w/o damaging or destroying it gets tricky, as the ID of the grip is slightly smaller than the bar, and the rubber grip "grips" the bar tightly. You can try peeling back the edge of the grip and spraying silicone, kroil, etc. in there to try and make it "slick", and some people (but never I) have had luck pumping air under the grip to expand it and yanking it off at the same time.......

Okay, this image is a bit on the big side and I cheaped out by just placing it on my scanner, but this is what is in the end of my bar on my Maxim-X. The bar weight has a vinyl cap on each end and a couple of rubber "O" rings in the middle. It should be just a friction fit but with age the vinyl or rubber bits may deteriorate to the point where you are getting metal on metal contact and THAT may be the cause of the rattle you hear.

Did a neat little reply and posted a pic and then I must have hit the wrong button. So, this is what is in the bar of my Maxim-X...

It is the brake side, so I'll pull the grip off and take a look. I don't think I would want to try the clutch side.
I think the black end cap is what I see. Since it moves pretty easily it could be the cause of the rattle. I'll let you know what I find when I get a chance to pull everything. Probably later this week. I have a Masonic Communication tomorrow night and possibly coaching during the week. Thanks for all your replys.
