Redoing the brakes on the rear of my 83 xj 650. The drum has some serious wear and tear and I would think you should be able to remove the complete drum, but cant figure it out. Can anyone point me to some resources or let me know what to do or how to proceed?

Easiest is to just replace the wheel.
How close is your nearest bike breaker?

The drum liner is a shrink-fit to the wheel. Replacement is not for the average home mechanic.
While there are shops that will do that service, it's easier to get a replacement wheel.

Link some pics of the drum liner just to let us be sure that you really do need a replacement.

Wow, ya I am with k-moe, don't use that. If you did you never know if will hold up or just keep peeling bits off.

Ebay usually has plenty of listing agree with Kmoe that is not a serviceable wheel , if it was just rust a wire wheel on a drill motor could clean it up, but thanks missing . Check Craig's list as well you might find a whole bike for sale .

if it is a 650 maxim consider a 750 maxim rear wheel the 750 has a wider brake shoe

Which is an upgrade, but he needs be sure to get the brake plate and throwout arm along with the wheel.
The Brake shoes are larger too, so he will need those as well.
