I'm in the process of redoing a 80 650 and I have the stock 12.5" rear shocks. The originals are 33 yrs old and need replacing....I would like to lower the rear an inch or so. Would it be a big deal if replaced with a 11-11.5" rear shock?? Anybody done that? Shouldn't change the handling?

    Thanks,
    af226

Dropping it an inch won't significantly change the handling as long as you fit shocks with the proper spring and damping rates for your bike. You should also probably still be fine, fender-clearance wise.

Totally in the opposite direction, but does anyone know the maximum shock length we can get away with on our shafties? I have an '81 XJ750 Seca. I was reading a post a long time ago and I can't seem to find it again, but if I remember correctly the general consensus was that it could be 13.5.
