I'm looking for some help. I bought a '83 XJ750K recently. It didn't run on account of an electrical issue. Fixed that and she fires, not quite runs but still.
The issue now is that the rear wheel seems locked up, if I push start it, it will start the engine, so I feel I can rule out broken driveshaft, but it's very resistive, to the point where the tire skids for a few seconds before rotating.
I've checked the final drive fluid, OK. Can you think of any tests or checks I should try before I take the drive shaft apart?

Did you check your drum? More specifically your brake pad? That's #1 on your list of things as a new XJ owner...

Your rear brakes may have delaminated. Don't try to ride it until you have checked/replaced them!!!

Rear brake pads are in expensive.

Those few seconds, are you sure they are'nt half seconds?
It sounds like normal push or drag on the clutch to me.
Are you a big bloke? Maybe a big bloke could push a bike in gear and make the rear tyre skid.

Still sounds like stuck and dragging rear break.

Even if its not check it to potentially save your life. Takes 10 min and a new cotter pin if bolts not seized.

If it rolls EASILY in neutral, that would temporarily rule out bad shoes. If it does roll easily in neutral but not when in gear, that would suggest seizure issues somewhere from the the clutch to the final gear. If the rear wheel is rolling easily, it would discount the rear drive through the U-Joint into the final gear, as that will all turn as a unit with the rear wheel. So, I'd think somewhere in the trans. area.
