Remember that sound I was trying to hunt down?

At first I thought it might have been a bearing in my front wheel. Then someone suggested it was my front caliper (which it seemed very probable). However, yesterday, on my run to Owensboro (a 60 mile 4 lane highway run), after reaching Owensboro, the sound was almost deafening! Furthermore, instead of stopping at 30 miles an hour, it wouldn't stop until I came to almost a complete stop. To top all this off, my MPH gauge had a BIGTIME wiggle in it, with is min being close to my true speed, and the max being some 30 MPH greater. All of a sudden, on the way back to Bowling Green, the sound stopped, and the MPH gauge stopped wiggling (but still reads my true speed). Could this have been something in my speed gauge or line to my front wheel?

If I had to guess, I would say either the speedometer cable or the gear assembly on the left side of the front tire.

I had a similar experience with my speedo cable on a very cold morning this winter. My cable was a little loose on the back of the speedo housing. Mine was also extremely loud. At a stop light I wiggled and tightened it, and it stopped. When I got home, I disconnected the whole cable, ran a bunch of penetrating oil down it, and the haven't heard it since. Not sure what was the real problem, but it hasn't returned. I'm not so sure it wasn't actually in the housing though??? I haven't worried about it in quite a while since my speedo works just fine, and no more noise.

Wow. Just ran up to the store to get some dinner (forgot my card and had to come back). The sound started again, and my speedometer needle started to vibrate again, only this time, a very small distance (like 2 MPH or so). The sound stopped and to my surprise my speedometer needle is broken off! Its still there, you can see what is left still moving, but now I have no needle! Ouch... Gonna need a whole new speedometer now? How do you replace the needle?
