Rebuilding an old 1980 xj650 maxim, going through everything and (see photo attached) as I understand when you take the cover off the stator should come out easy, ha....looks as tho the wax or whatever is coating the copper wires has melted to the casing and in there solid. Can't really get to the magneto since the stator is in the way. was going to put a meter on it and inspect it, bike is not running just working up to that point. Any suggestions on my next move without destroying the stator? Thanks in advance. and sorry if I'm doing something that isn't to this sites standards. Saw a vid on youtube using a screwdriver to hold the magneto to get the bolt out and put in another rounded off bolt and hitting it with hammer and knocking the magneto out, but with the stator in, can't quite get a screwdriver in to hole the magneto.

Terminology, the "magneto" this the stator and looking at it and your rotor it does not look like it is in good condition. Drop engine in gear and then try to back bolt out . Once it is out use a long bolt with the same thread pitch , thread bolt in strike the end of the bolt with a large hammer several times the rotor is a tapered fit it should come loose . If this does not work take a drill bit slightly smaller than the opening of the rotor, cut bit off about 1/2" . Place this into the hole and then put the bolt in and start tightning it down . The bolt pushing against the bit should rotor off.

OK, got the rotor out now I have the stator or the windings stuck inside the housing. "See Photos" whatever coating the put on the windings/stator looks to have melted or something and is it really stuck. Any suggestions? don't want to damage the case, just get the damn thing out.

if the windings are really toast, i would be tempted to put some "Dremmel" cuts across the metal plates, be carefull not to cut the case. windings and plates should come out piece by piece, bit of penetrating oil would also help

Since you need a new stator , take a flat blade screw driver and a hammer, and start breaking it up carefully.

Yep. the lacquer melted to the case. Breaking the stator up will work, but I'd follow up (or even use at the start) lacquer thinner or acetone to free it up. You want to get all of the melted lacquer goobers out of the housing or installing the new stator will be a PITA.
