So I'm a rookie taking my 82 xj650lj mikuni carbs apart for a clean but im stuck on trying to remove the emulsion tubes. I read about a drift tool on another post. Can anyone articulate further on what it takes to remove these things? Will any drift tool from the parts store work?

Are the emulsion tubes the type with a screw in jet at the bottom?
If they are, get one of the screws that hold the carb top or float bowl on, and screw it part way into the emulsion tube, once you've taken the jet out of course, and then gently tap on the screw with a small hammer, with a crosshead screwdriver in place.

Head over to xj4ever.com -- there are some PDF files that Len and I have put together that might help. One is Cleaning the Mikuni carbs (I took a file from the XJCD and added pictures). Another is Setting Fuel Levels.

If you get stuck, holler -- I'm closer than you think.

    Right. The main fuel jet.

Another method would be to only unscrew the main jet part way, and tap on the jet with the handle of the screwdriver. That should be enough to break it loose.

One last note: as I mention in the Mikuni cleaning file, and as RickCoMatic has said countless times before; for mixture screws and fuel jets, whatever screwdriver one uses, make sure the blade has NO free play in the slots. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Do NOT tap too hard. It is very easy to mess these up if they are really stuck.

Many times, these carbs are on bikes that have sat for eons and the gas has dried out past 'sticky' and everything has corroded and turned to dry packed-in powder. Careful penetration oils, heat, tapping, etc..... will usually get them out. But like I said, do it carefully and don't get too heavy handed. More than once I have had to get a new carb body or tube to be able to continue.

be careful and you'll be fine.

I had a removal issue with my emulsion tubes (Hitachi)... The problem is explained by me (1st post), and I explain what I had to do, but others had good advice on what to do as posted here:
