Ok, I give up. The manuals are no help, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to disconnect the brake light switch wires from the master cylinder on my '83 XJ900. One manual shows the style with the spade lugs, the other doesn't even mention disconnecting it. I got the metal ring off but that didn't seem to help. I'm afraid I am going to break something if I try to force it.

    What's the secret?

Is there a hole under the switch you can push a paper clip into to remove the harness plug? You need to depress the tab like is shown on this pattern part I think

Thanks @Franz. I did finally get it. I saw the notes on @chacal's page about that, but it says except the 900, so I thought I was missing something. Couldn't see anything that looked like a tab in the hole. I finally used a hex socket I could press in the hole with my palm while using a flat blade to pry the switch out. It was really stuck in there. Something crusty all dried up had it glued in place. Only minor injuries in the process.

Now that I have the master cylinder free, I realize that the PO had been there with his usual antics and managed to strip both of the reservoir cap screws. EZ-out to the rescue again. Once inside, it's not pretty. He obviously didn't strip them doing maintenance. :p Lots of sludge in the bottom and lots of dried up brake fluid all over the cap.

    Time for more parts.

I was not 100% sure my 900f has a Honda master cylinder.
