    Hey there,

Modified XJ1100 with 7/8" bars. Want to replace the hand grips. I'm not exactly sure how to get the old ones off. I know the right one has a plastic throttle piece under it and I don't want to damage anything.

Anyone have some step by step tips or a video link that explains it well?

    Thanks in advance!

    Dave

if it's like my xj700 then you loosen the screws on the right side, (on the thing that has the starter button in it), that the throttle grip is connected to, you will have to split that thing apart to take the cable off the grip. The left side I stuck a smallish screwdriver in between the grip and the chrome bar (end had a plug in it) and worked it around until the glue came loose. I Didn't ruin anything. mine had weights (round tube thing) in each side of the bar, and fell out very easily. Hope this helps

if they are stock style all rubber just cut and peel unless you want to save them if the throttle is stock you may find that there are nubs at the end that will have to be cut off if you are replacing with aftermarket grips

If you want to save the grip on the left:

    1. You gotta just take the time to work it and work it and work it
    Or
    2. Sometimes good blasts of compressed air in the end home will balloon it enough to break the seal and let you slide it off a little at a time with each blast of air.

Either way, you gotta work at it. I've only ever had to cut on off.. And that was a junk one anyway--- was trying to rescue it as a spare, but got tired of working on it. I could have gotten it if I kept at it but it was any my one anyway and finally said "that's enough"

if they're open ended, then the best way is to push a thin screwdriver down the end, then squirt a blast of wd40 in with the long straw. then work it round ,and do the same underneath, after working the driver round the grip will twist straight off. worked for me :)

If they're not open-ended and the air or wd-40 doesn't work wrap it with a rag and use channel locks to slowly twist it off (it'll take some muscles). Use a couple quick shots of SWMBO hair spray to put it on the new bars.

I am interested how you mounted 7/8" bars. I would like to do the same on my XJ1100 (my avatar)

Cut them off. No reason to work too hard.

If it does not have a hole in the end of the grip, you can jam the nozzle from compressed air gun under front/inside edge, as far as you can (skinnier nozzles are easier) give a couple of blasts, usually pop right off

set your valves and rebuild your carbs or changing your grips is useless
