Hey all, this is my first time needing to replace my throttle cable. I have a 1982 XJ750 Maxim. The throttle cable snapped on a ride and now I have to replace it. Any advice or help on how I should go about replacing it would be nice. I already have the new throttle cable. Thanks.

Get the part from Len (XJ4ever link top right corner). Don't even consider one from ebay, etc. Bought a clutch cable from another vendor. It was "close" and I made it work, but Len will get you exactly the correct one if you provide him model number, VIN, etc.

It should not be too hard to replace, just take note of routing of the cable when you remove the old one. I find photos before disassembly helpful.

I believe you have to take screws on the throttle housing apart, and you will see how the end of the cable attaches to the throttle tube. Google throttle cable adjustment for motorcycle for general information. On my XJ550 the owners manual calls for about 2-3mm of cable slack as I recall (someone else can provide the exact slack for your model).

I'm also having trouble with my throttle cable. It doesnt seem to be pulling the butterflies at all and it doesnt snap back into place? Its all free play. I just bought a 1982 xj650 maxim so I'm not too sure what the PO was doing.

Could you please ask that question in the thread you already havae about you machine?

Spreading your questions all over makes it harder for us to keep track of what has, and has not, been done to your machine. Knowing all of what is going on makes it easier to help.
