    Is it doable?
I asked the local shop and they're charging more than I had hoped, plus the mechanic honestly told me that he doesn't do that kind of work a lot, so working time may vary (and with it the sum of the bill).

So I'm wondering, given the right tools, is it doable by someone who just started discovering the mechanical world of old bikes. So far I've managed to clean my carbs, got the valves in spec, do a vacuum sync, and other basic maintenance work. I'm also working on a 2nd engine that will be split and then fixed (if fixable).

Also, any ideas on how hard the timing chain wears down when it's not tensioned properly?

You need to borrow a chain breaker, wire the new chain to the end of the old one & draw it round.
