thought i would share this anyone trying to put a Bobber back to stock that cut the rear of the frame off and want to put it back on. you can see by the pic i reinstalled the rear top frame back on after the former owner hacked it off and tried to make a Bobber out of it. I used 2 long 5/8 spark plug sockets ground them just a little to rough them up persuaded them into both ends of the frame via big hammer once they got started in both halves worked it together. You can see where the p.o drilled a hole in the frame to bolt the fender on i am going to drill a hole on the back half to the socket. mount the fender make sure it all aligns perfect it should then pull the fender clean all the paint off weld up the holes just for a little extra beef and weld the two together right now with no welds i can sit on it and it doesn't move so i think it will be a lifetime fix. I was worried that i couldn't get it straight when i welded it but i couldn't ask for better

So its an un bobber project. There will probably be a bunch of purist bobber guys on here that will say no way man dont re-assemble it. Why would you want a stock bike? I say to each there own. I think, Im not sure, I think, nope lost it. Maybe we could save some time if we just set up a bobber/ un bobber exchange. All kidding aside good idea using something inside the pipes to get things lined up. Good thing PO saved the parts.

Well I think its awesome your bringing it back to its former glory. I suppose you should be glad that rear section was the only part cut.

Since I am doing the exact opposite I am looking forward to seeing how your rebuild goes. Have any pictures of the bike before you started on it? Hope you have as much fun unbobbering your bike as I am having bobbering my bike.

its an 85 maxim x . I dont have a problem with bobbers to each their own just to rare of a bike to chop up i felt bad for it when i saw it on ebay it runs fine ive had it a year now put about a mile on it I had to many bike projects getting ready to sell the last virago. So i finally got it on the lift an can start working on it. there is no rush i can't ride right now health reasons. But it will not be 100 percent stock there will be tastefull light modifications like all the aluminum parts polished ect will be a challenge but i am one of those people that love to make fugly things look good. i have about $500 in the bike the f.o. just had it painted it has 2 brand new tires all the chrome for the carbs and airbox carbs rebuilt and new fork seals

looks like i am going to have a set back for a month or so on the bike. Ive been thinking about making my garage bigger i am running out of room. i have so many tools from presses to welders parts washer sandblasting cabinet . my garage is a oversize 2 car keep my race car in it have spare motor i have 11 foot workbench a portable roll around bench with my grinder buffer drill press belt sander on it as well as a floor band saw, compressor and all my tool boxes in it besides my drive on bike lift and 2 bikes. its ok for the summer but now in the winter all the outside plants are inside under grow lights its very cramped not to mention i cant get to my work bench because of the plants its driving me nuts. I ran across a 12 x 24 shed with a door a window and single car roll up door for a little over 3k new looks really well built local builder. i am thinking of making it my little bike shop i retired last week so will have alout of time im 47 years old so i need a place to work in. I can put a window unit in the window and have air and heat the more i think about working in my garage especially with gas it bothers me since i have a gas hot water heater. Do you think its a good idea ? also have to have sugery this month on my ankle i have a huge bone spur removed thats causing me much pain

    Let's see.....you're going to have a "set-back"!?!?! Hmmm...

    1. Gonna get a bike garage/shop
    2. just retired
    3..only 47

Ankle surgery is incidental.....you'll need the garage/shop to putter in while you recuperate!

Have fun, and congrats on the retirement!

Let us know how things work out.

yea my garage is driving me nuts . its so packed for the winter with family members plants. getting my virago ready to sell swapped the bikes on the lift have to pull the carbs off the virago again. so im doing it on the floor will be glad when its gone. all the additives in atlanta gas makes it go bad really quickly granted it sat for 4 months but the carbs were spotless i have ran seafoam thru it done everything i can without pulling them so i am going to bite the bullet and pull them.
retirement isnt that great i had no plans on doing it but last year they treated me for the wrong disease it almost killed me i collapsed in march from the treatments. the treatments put what i do have in overdrive finally diagnosed with charcot marie tooth disease. i have gotten so i can walk around the house now but still need a walker when i go to stores or my scooter but adleast i am getting around my hands are a mess thats why i want to redo this thing it keeps me sane as active as i was before all this to being a couch potato isnt me. The worst part of it is i cant do a thing to the dr that made me this way because its a progressive disease cant prove it made me this way. when i went to him the first time i just had some tingling and numbness in my hands and feet. But on the bright side between my ssi and retirement at work i bring home $500 a month more then i did when i was working. its not a fun way to retire but im gonna push myself to get better just so i can ride my maxim.
i am thinking of getting a custom garage done instead of the one i was looking at want the door on the other side and another window will cost about 1500 more but this is gonna be a 1 time thing . i am thinking of taking on some polishing work to keep me busy to after i get it installed also . but setting it up getting it wired and painted on the inside will take a little time. the dr said i will be able to walk on my foot after surgery with some kind of boot so we will see
