    Quick question:

I'm rewiring my 85 xj700n and wondering if one of the ignition coils is grounded with a black wire. My old harness didn't have one and I think that's why it may have gone bad in the first place. The new harness has a black wire with a metal circle on the end. My wiring diagram in the manual shows four grounds to each coil.

there are wires as you discribed that go to the bolts on the coils that are grounds
the bolts would also act as grounds to the frame.

if this is what you are looking at, the grounds represent the sparkplug grounding to the motor
space between arrow heads is the plug gap
