How can I be sure that my liquid cooled bike won't overheat this summer?

As you can see in my signature, I have a Maxim X. Bought it last fall. The guy told me the thermostat needed to be replaced, because the bike felt smokin' hot and the temp. gauge hovered around the RED area at stop lights.

So far, I've only ridden it in the cooler weather....so it's never been an issue.

I've read that it's typical for the temp gauge on a Maxim X to do that. It'll go right up to the RED, but not actually be overheating.

My question: How can I be sure it's not going to overheat?
I don't want to damage my bike.

Does the fan come on when it gets close to the RED?

It's also pretty easy to add a manual switch to turn the fan on before the thermal switch trips.

    I don't know?
    It's never gotten that hot?

Okay, so the thermostat should tell the fan when to kick on?
If that isn't happening, my thermostat is probably failing?

I'd just hate to ride it to work, and have something happen.

start her up and let her idle. The bike should kick the fan on right as the needle gets to the red. A manual switch is nice due to the fact you can just put it on when you want and keep her cooler

Yeah, whether sitting at idle or riding around between stoplights, the fan doesn't kick on until the needle hits the red. It's normal for these bikes. You guys have me wanting to put in a manual switch for insurance now, though. :)

I have a feeling the previous owner was just freaking out over nothing.

    Or at least I hope.

If I saw a temp. gauge go up that high, I'd freak out a little too.
If the fan kicked on, I'm sure I'd put it all together though.

There is a thermal switch on the thermostat housing.
Technically, the thermostat only regulates the flow of coolant but the switch senses when it's getting hot.

It's the switch with two wires going to it. You can test the fan by simply short circuiting the two posts on the thermal switch. The fan SHOULD kick on then (even when cold)
If not, you might have a blown fuse or other wiring issue somewhere.
