IMHO, NGK BP7ES (0.028-.0.32 gap) and Castrol 20-50 API are the ticket for happiness John. I'm guessing your ambient air temps are above 20 C regularly so the heavier oil is indicated. Drop a can of SeaFoam or Berrymann's B-12 into the crankcase and let it idle for about 5 to 10 minutes before you change the oil, that will clean out the goo really well. Congratulations on your achievement, enjoy riding safely!

Congratulations I recently got my 82 xj650 on the road did some of the same things I agree with Robert on the NGK’s and the oil. I also changed the shaft oil after I went for a 10min ride I drained it and replaced it with 80w90 semi-synthetic. I also cycled new brake fluid though and changed the front brake pads. There's is always a bunch of safety and maintenance things you can do to a 25 year old bike but hey that’s part of the fun. It was one of the reasons I bought mine. Going out to the garage to wrench on the bike gets me away from it all for a while. According to my wife too long :D Most of all have safe fun!
