I am taking the valve cover off the bike to check the valve clearances and I was wondering if there is any other routine maintenance that I should be doing since I am buying a new gasket and pressure washers etc.

If your valve clearances are not to spec, you will have plenty to keep you busy, but there isn't much else you can do in there.

Take a look at the cam chain and gears.

not really routine but theres no better time to clean up your valve cover and slap it with a fresh coat of high temp paint while your waiting for shims

Like Shaun said; this is hi-temp "lo-gloss" black with gloss black in between the YICS...

OR you could get "colorful" depending on your bike...

Cool!! I really like the idea of painting the cover. I think I'ma do mine blue when I paint the gas tank and whatnot. Thats hot. I gotta be sure to check my valve clearnces too... Soo here in a month or two gotta buy those shims and and valve checker.

I have a question? I'm not trying to hijack the thread. But I think it relates.
Do you need to put any RTV like ultra gray at any points on the valvecover gasket at all? Or will the new gasket make a perfect seal?

You only want to seal the gasket to the cover. Most important thing is to change the rubber grommets on the screws as on most models the screws have a shoulder and you don't torque the cover but the screws and the rubber presses the cover down. Also coat the mating gasket and head surfaces with oil and it will seal down just fine.

See Fitz's how too all this is covered with pics!
