I’ve noticed while riding my 82 XJ550 maxim the rpms do not decrease when I pull the clutch lever in. In fact, they actually increase. Any ideas?

Check throttle cable routing. Check to make sure your throttle cable is adjusted properly it should be a tiny bit of slack. Check to make sure your throttle cable is lubed. And check that your idol is set properly.
If none of those things work have you sync the carbs? And you probably want to check for vacuum leaks.

Check throttle cable is returning to idle at carbs. Lube if necessary.
