    Hey guys,
    I have a Yamaha XJ 900 f -85, it's a Café racer project. I bought a universal speedometer from eBay, and got all the wiring correct except that the rpm/tachometer is not working. Can't figure out which wire on the bike that is correct from my Haynes book. Does anyone know which colour the wire for rpm-reeding has on the bike?

    Thanks!

    //Jimmy

    its the gray wire on the coil pack, you could use the orange wire too.

    Hello again. Tried and connected the rpm-wire from the eBay speedometer (see picture) to the grey wire, and then to the orange wire on the coil pack, but it didn't work with any of the wires (the tach-needle does not move at all). I have also tried and wind the rpm-wire around one of the ignition cables, but it does not work...

    Any tip?

    This link the OP never reported back to let us know - different gauge, but likely similar problem.

    http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/couple-small-problems.83868/#post-501498

    And, a fix on YouTube for the gauge you have where the tach signal was moved to the pick-up coil:

    And, another YouTube link to consider that was done on the FZS600 Fazer:

    I am not certain the FZS600 uses a TCI, but the parts list labels it as an Igniter Assembly.

    So, some options, let us know if any work.

    Great, thank you! Will try some of the discussed options later on and let you know the results.

    Now it works! I connected the rpm-wire from the speedometer (yellow/black on this one, but can be purple/black on some models what I understand) to the grey wire on the left 3-pin connector on the CDI-box. See video below. The reading is a bit low, but maybe I just have to change settings in the speedometer menu

    Thanks for the help! Will post again when my Café Racer project is done
