The exhaust system on my XJ650 (I currently restoring) shows signs of rust. I would appreciate ideas on how to stop the rust, without destroying any more chrome, or how to 'clean-up' the exhaust system. Thanks, Stephen.

You might want to try the coke and aluminum foil method.

Hi guys, can you please elaborate on this procedure. The coke/vinegar I can understand, sounds likes a weak acid option, such as dilute phosphoric acid, but the use of tin foil eludes me. Thanks, Stephen.

You use the tin/aluminum foil as a rag.
It doesn't leave behind metal hairs, that rust, like steelwool.

I have heard of people using CLR (Calcium Lime and Rust remover) for this process.

Boiling in lemon juice removes all the rust. I let the stuff cook a few hours.

I did a set of carb hats that were extremely rusted. Now they are extremely pitted and rust free.

Once you get the rust gone the surface will not be smooth.
