I recently bought a Puch moped and the tank has a lost of rust in it. ( I realize that a moped is not a real motorcycle, but I've wanted a moped since I saw them in the Sears catalog when I was a kid. Besides, it looks nice next to my XJ700) Since the tank is part of the frame it's not easy to maneuver. So I am going to use the electrolysis method. My concern is how to prevent rust from reforming after the electrolysis is completed. Any suggestions?

phosphoric acid will turn all the rust black and stop it from rusting in the already rusted spots
look at the many ways listed in info overload on tank cleaning

    apple cider viniger is used

You say the tank is part of the frame? I think I might avoid electrolysis on that. It might suffer from hydrogen embrittlement. There could be up to 85% loss of strengyh in the metal. Maybe someone on here could provide more info. I know just enough that i'd avoid it.

Is the tank completely rusty? Is some of it still good. If so, perhaps it would be best to use Metal Rescue or Evapo-Rust. They don't attack metal. Acid will etch everything and it will rust again if not protected.

+1. No electrolysis on a stressed tank. Phosphoric acid.

I'm personally a big fan of evapo-rust! Fill the tank with it and let it sit a day or two depending on how bad the rust is, empty and rinse( don't pitch it you can keep reusing it!) Won't hurt paint or anything else, after rinsing tank fill with gas

The only downside to using Evporust (it is a great product) is that it does not prevent (or even slow) future rust formation. The tank will either need to be lined, or kept full of gas and fogged with oil during storage (as well as being fogged with oil right after rinsing out the Evaporust).
