Hang on to it, I'm sure you can find another engine if that one it toast.

    Me too.

There's too much nice motorcycle there to let a little thing like a blowed up motor stand in the way.

It would be interesting to know what happened.

I'd be curious to know what caused the lockup ...... did it seize or drop a gear ?

bugger that it happened though.

What makes you think the motor is locked, and not the transmission jammed by a piece of broken guide? A locked motor due to lack of lubrication would more likely result in broken rods, and a busted case.

Pull the clutch assembly to seperate the transmission from the engine. If the engine turns over. The problem lies in the transmission, and chain guides.

If the engine turns over with the clutch out.
Bike in gear. Rotate the rear wheel backwards to see if the transmission will turn. Possibly dislodgeing any pieces that may be jamming it.

Do some investigative work before throwing in the towel.

    Razz, sad to hear
Check with Union Cycle Salvage on Telephone rd and 610. Last time I was there they had an XJ right in the center of the aisle as you walk to the back. Not sure of the details though. Good luck friend ...

Not giving up yet, by a long shot. I just put the engine back together 3 days before the lock up. I replaced the starter clutch and chain, all of my guides are brand new. I can pull the clutch in and the engine will not turn over, even with my 2 foot long wrench on the end of the crank. I have two motors lined up. One has 12000 miles on the with 150 across the cylinders, $400 plus shipping. Its in Fort worth' probably just pick it up, save the shipping. Another one in Iowa 5000 miles on it good compression on all four. $300 plus $140 shipping to a business. This one looks very clean. Just trying to raise the dough. Got the bike up on the stand I will be posting some post tear down photos soon.

Razz: One thing I noticed when I put the engine together, was that the main bearing would not turn in two instances. When I looked further into it, two rod brackets were mounted opposite to the other two (which were turning fine).
Once I turned them around and bolte on, they turned over fine.

Would have happened anyway without the road trip. A number of transmissions built in the last 30 years were design failures, and clogged lines or broke down, dirty fluid can kill em pretty easy. Used to be transmissions outlasted everything else-not anymore.

Was is a Ford? Never owned a Ford that didn't eat its own tranny at some point. Or maybe a Mitsubishi? That's the only thing I've had to have a transmission rebuilt in that had a stick shift. Whoever heard of a standard transmission going out? Well, I'll never own another Mitsu, no way.

I have a 98 escort wagon, and the clutch started slipping real bad around 175k miles. bought a new clutch kit, dropped the tranny and found the old friction disc to be perfectly fine - just that the pilot bearing disintegrated. weird, but oh well, lol.

fixed it up proper and its been on the road ever since, now at 222k and no sign of quitting anytime soon :D

Full auto olds cutlas supreme, I have another tranni lined up just not looking forward to changing it out, got drop the entire engine and sub frame. But on the super +++++++ side, I have a perfectly good engine for my bike now. I will be checking the shims and switching it out with the old one Tuesday. I will keep you posted on why the old one seized.

Glad to hear about the xj engine!!

And I hear ya Bout the tranny swap, I had to unbolt a bunch of shit to be able to lift my engine up enough to angle the tranny out.

Good luck! If I was closer I'd help you in a heartbeat!

She is alive,,,, done the engine swap on the bike. I think I broke my own record doing so, took me 45 min to pull the old one and an hour to put the new one in. Got her fired right up and after adjusting the clutch she pulls REAL hard. She is no longer pretty looking (that will come soon), but I don't care. I am going to ride her like I am making sweet love to a beautiful woman. It is cold out side and the wind is around 20 mph gust up to 30, and I still can't wait to ride her to work tonight. I want to thank ever one on hear that lifted me up when I was down, and giving me all the support that a friend needs. I could no have asked for a better set of strangers / friends ;). John Stone are you up for a ride?

Great news razz! Sounds like you made out all right with the new motor!

Stories like this are what keeps us going :). 45 min to pull the engine eh? Holy!!! Did you lay it down and drop it out that way or use a hoist?

Nope, floor jack to raise the engine, slide it over the frame, and then on to a milk crate, which by the way looks like it was design for the job. The milk crate is the EXACT height of the top of the bottom frame. Cold ride today, But the smile is still frozen on my face.
