im really interested in that satin black look (thats the same as semi gloss right?) and i was thinking about atempting it on my bike using alot of tips from guys on this forum and especially painterD.

my question is... when you go satin black do you still apply clear coat at the end? ive never painted before so i dont know if clear coat ends up making it look glossy (which is what i dont want). but at the same time i do want to protect the paint job from gas spills and such. thanks.

only satin clear coat will do. never mix paint families. Always test on your empty cans. Prep is 90 %, painting fun is 10% ride safe.

Krylon makes a matte clear in a can.

wait so what? your saying that theres differnt types of clear coat? so with satin paint you use a matte clear or satin gloss?

also is semi-gloss black the same as satin black?

Just use a matte clear to keep your paint from getting glossy. I didn't have any better protection from gas spills with a rattle-can clear coat though. I used a flat black engine paint and had the best results.

Clear is usually quite glossy, if you spray a gloss over flat paint.... Well, then you'll have a glossy finish. Krylon also makes "Ultra-flat" black which looks great, but will show EVERY TINY DETAIL and imperfection if you've not prepped correctly.

As paint goes, I really like Duplicolor for all my needs. I've had no problems with it, and it's consistant one can to the next. I have 2 cans of high heat clear on my Kaw cafe bike tank, and it's held up great to gas spills.

Yes and No, I used to work in a paint shop, We sold ICI - its an offshoot of PPG and there was a difference between semi-gloss and satin. Satin is absolutely flat, basically as flat as you can get, while semigloss is as the name suggests still glossy - but then again this difference depends on the paint system you use. IF you use a base coat/ clearcoat system, then the final finish is all in the clear, If you use n acrylic enamel or urethane then it is the paint it self that gets flattened. My advice is go to your local paint supplier and find out your options.

    Hope that helps

Ace, are we talking about $4.99 rattle cans or the full-blown shoot-it-with-a-paint-gun $100 a quart paint. I'm talking rattle cans, myself.

hmm still a little confused. im strictly talking rattle cans here and all i basically need to know is

    1) if i prime the paint job. satin black the paint job...then do i need to finish by clear coating the paint job. or do you just finish with the rattle can satin black paint job.

2)if you in fact DO need to clear coat. what clear coat do you use so that the finish does NOT look shiny.

3)satin black/matte black/ and semi gloss black are all differnt then? damn im confused about this.

The "sheen" of paint goes like this Flat, Eggshell, Satin, Semi-Gloss, Gloss. So no they are not the same. yes you need a clear. If you dont want it glossy then use a matte/satin clear over the satin paint. if you want it to be shinny use the semi-gloss and a regular clear.

i have about 3 satin or flat black bikes and 2 cars, the best paint for the job is the bbq black paint, you can find it at lowes or home depot. its used for painting bbq's but its scratch and gas resistent rating is awesome, use filler primer, block sand, then shoot with the bbq paint, last a long time
