Can anyone tell me if the XJ seats are compatible across models? I have an '82 XJ650J and don't like the seat that is on it and would like to get an original one. I'm wondering if one from a 550 or 750 would work - particularly the 750 as they are even covered by the same Haynes book ...

    No joy Biff,
The stock seats will not swap between the 650 Max and 750s, seat pan is totally different.
Of course if there is a will there is a way, just a heap of hacking and splicing that will yield medeocure results. Best bet it to take your existing seat pan and have a custom cover built for it by a local shop.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Ah well.

I don't want to "destroy" the current seat - it is in fine shape. It is one of those Saddleman double bucket touring. The problem is that it puts me too far forward on the bike. I am hoping to get an original and then sell this one - thereby hopefully breaking even ...

Maybe you can post some pics in the SELL SWAP BUY forum.
There might be some takers in this forum that could give you an even trade.
    Worth a shot, eh?

<chuckle> I hadn't realized there was a sell, swap ... forum. Haven't finished exploring here yet.

My big question about such is: what type of controls/safety do you have doing such? How does one keep from getting ripped off without any accountability?

there are always going to0 be problems but I've been wheeling and dealing quite over the past year and haven't had any trouble. I've found that during the time of communication before you actually do the deal can give you a solid feeling on wether or not your getting taken. The big thing I've noticed is the high level of integrity from the people on this site. They will actually tell you what they have is worse than what it really is.

I have the same problem with a stock seat on an '80 XJ650. Pushes me too far forward. Going to try and remove some of the foam on the backside as it rises up for the passenger and see if that works. 6" looks like it would do.

paypal protects you, and have done so for me more than once. just need to keep good records of all communications between buyer/seller and retain all "advertising" pictures in case you need to file a complaint.

and no guarantee, but it helps when you happen to be dealing with someone who's been a real member of the forum here, not just a 'drop in/drive by' seller. I would put a premium on that if you have a choice.

Obviously Chacal is safe and reputable (I know... "Well, Duh!") and I've had great dealings with other XJBike regulars. Twitchbiker and Phil Brewer, for example, went so far out of the way helping me that I need to start shopping Christmas presents.

Paypal does not protect you if they seller has removed the funds from their account.

Your best bet is to use a paypal account linked to your credit card. If paypal can't or won't transfer funds back to you, then call up you CC co. and have them reverse the transaction.

That said, I'm glad I found this thread. I was looking at a 550 seat for my 650 on eBay. Seller had it for $12. Oh well.

I have made several transactions with members of this forum without incident. But I do use a bit of caution and purchase from folks who have been here a while. Rick has been burned by a member so do be advised that you should not send more than you can afford to lose.
Chacal has been a straight shooter to us all, I am now a loyal customer.

Hey,Biff. I have an extra XJ 650 Maxim seat...cover is not so nice, but foam and pan are in great shape.I would be looking for $30 plus shipping (should be about $20).As for trustworthyness (is that even a word?),I am sure that there is more than one member of this site that will vouch for my integrity.
