I can't seem to get the seat on my XJ 650 to stay on. It's the stock seat as far as I know. It hooks in under the gas tank and has two hook latches at the back that look like they are supposed to catch on some posts on the frame, but I can't push them down enough to catch? There is a key slot on the starboard side of the bike, but the ignition key won't turn it. Does that have something to do with the seat latching mechanism? I swear I'm not retarded, but this has me truly stumped. Am I missing something simple?

the key should only be needed to unlock the seat. You could just take the cylinder apart and rest all the tumbles so anything will work in there to.

Squirt alittle lube in the locking mechinism and work the lever back and forth. pulling one way should unlock the helmet lock and pushing should unlock the seat. Other then checking for proper alingment and lube it should be pretty retard proof.

    Good Luck

The lock is a combination seat lock helmet lock there is a pin that comes out of the backside of the lock that engages the seat release lever on mine the key has to be used to take off and put on the seat. Spray some lube in there and work the lock back and forth with the key maybe it will work loose.

Yeah. On my XJ550 it uses kind of like the end of the key to unlock a little box in the rear. There are two rubber straps in there that i can pull up and attach to the two hooks on the back of the seat. Took me a bit to figure mine out. ha. Not sure if the 650 is that way.

WD40 is for displacing water (WD=Water Displacement.)

Use a real lubricant, the WD will gum up on you sooner or later.

gday, i had a similar problem with the seat lock not working with mine, what i do is push the little lever with the hole in it that is attached to the seat in towards the wheel then it should slide over the little pole and lock into place,to remove the seat i get a screw driver and push the lever in and pull it back, thats if we are talking about the same set up.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm glad to say I'm not completely retarded. I pulled the lock and found out that the lock is not meant for the same key that I have for the ignition. 3 of the 5 pins on the lock were not the right ones. So I pulled out all but one of the pins and reassembled the lock. Now my key opens the seat and helmet lock both no problem. I'm not worried about having one pin in there because seriously who steals a seat? Haha

As for wd40 not being a real lubricant, I know. It's just all i had available at the time. Thanks everyone for the help!
