Weather cooled off a bit- ride out is around 60 degrees now each morning..

I let the bike warm up for a minute or two- usually needs a half pull on the choke...

Warms up a bit and roll down my road about 1/2 a mile... taking it easy...

Get it on to the main road- its average speed is about 60mph...

Once it gets up through the gears and sits at 60 for a little bit suddenly the red oil light pops on... it stays on for about a minute and then goes off...

I know that the oil level is fine, check it all the time (paranoid about big red lights in instrument clusters lol) .... this seems strange though no real reason for it to come on.

Could it just be a faulty sensor? Is this pressure based or just looking for a level at the bottom of the pan? Running a 10/40 oil- it has about 1500 miles since the last change, the oil matched the requirements for the manual and also said "specific for wet clutch systems" - figured that was perfect...

    Any ideas?

    ALSO
My valve adjustment last all of 2 weeks- bike is ticking away again.... I feel like it might be a little more vibrate"y" above 6k as well but not sure...

I rarely beat it up to bad- i've hit the redline all of one time...

Bike has just under 20k miles on it.

The oil level sensor is just that, a level sensor; it has nothing to do with pressure.

Where is your oil level? On the CENTERstand, it sould be slightly above the marks but with a "bubble" still visible at the top.

If your level is good but you keep getting the light coming on, suspect a wiring or connection problem.

Valves "ticking" does not mean they're out of adjustment. Does your bike spend a lot of time on the sidestand?

Also: Once you've adjusted the valves, especially if a few were WAY out of adjustment, you'll need to re-sync your carbs again (vac sync.) If you haven't that would explain the new "buzziness."

Bike does spend all of its time on the side stand when not in use- I have no center stand.

On level ground centering the bike (with a friend) the oil level is right up in the top of the view finder, it looks perfect.

After the valve adjustment the bike was running smooth and quiet- no ticking EXCEPT for when it was really cold in the mornings... this went away after a few minutes of running... but its slowly been getting worse, even now once fully warmed up its still ticking...

I wonder about the carb syncing- this all happened backwards, I was told initially that the carbs we rent synced- for 80 bucks I had that taken care of... then they told me "your valves need adjusted..." so that was done AFTER the sync... guess now Ill have to go get it synced again :/ getting expensive..

Not even sure if that's the whole problem- the engine it self although it runs strong has a gritty feel about it- very mechanical sound and im a not sure if that is normal or not... its hard to describe...

OK. First off, XJs that spend a lot of time on the sidestand WILL "tick" it was a known issue and not a concern more of a perception.

Valve adjustment has to be done before carb sync; it's just the physics of the situation. Adjusting the valves WILL throw your sync off.

Overall vibration is very much a function of carb sync; as is the "mechanical sound" moreso than on the bigger bikes. The reason for this is the chain-driven primary. Any "lope" or un-evenness in the idle will be magnified by the primary chain/transmission/clutch and give you more "mechanical" sounds. Smooth out the idle and the whole thing will quiet down.

Get the carbs properly sync'ed now that the valves are in spec and see how it feels.

    Roger that will do.

Why does the side stand effect the engine ticking? Or better yet, How?

Im not sure if perhaps there is some confusion too by the the statement "a lot of time on the side stand" - when i say that i am meaning that it is parked like that.

However I ride it ALL the time- ive put over 5000 miles on it this summer alone...

Mine did the same thing for a tad -- I put about 1/4 bottle extra oil in it each change and the light stays off.

I think it's just one of those quirks with the Seca II's. Let me know if you find out anything else, though.

Sorry to bring a thread out of its grave here, but I'm having the same issue on my 81 550 maxim. Today I took it to work, on the ride in, after warming up and getting on the road, about 5 mins in the ride, the oil light pops on, stays on for a min, then goes off. Same story on the ride home.. was like dejavu.. 5 mins in the ride oil light comes on for a min, then off.

Fresh off a new oil change, level is perfect on center stand nice lil bubble.
