I'm going to go in and change the oil on this baby for the first time. Ordered gasket for oil pump cover...guess that's the right one? Question is, once I remove cover and install new filter... Is there any sealer or treatment i need to do to the gasket or surfaces before putting everything back together? Would like to avoid leaks after.

Make sure that there aren't any nicks or anything like that, clean the surfaces as good as you can (wipe of oil etc from the grooves), then you should be golden.

Umm, no. There is no oil pump to cover there (it's hidden behind the clutch.) What Yamaha calls the "oil pump cover" gasket is the ignition cover gasket. Save it, you'll need it eventually.

The oil filter housing uses a large o-ring (#6 below) and a much smaller one (#5) on the filter bolt. If you get a FRAM CH6003 filter, it comes with both o-rings.

    This might help too:

    Speaking of 550 gaskets...

Fitz, what's involved in changing the number 12 in that picture? I still haven't tracked down my leak. I know oil shows up at the bottom of the engine, but it's the lowest point and it can come from anywhere, so I'm planning on replacing o-ring and seal behind the sprocket. At the same time, that gasket might be leaking, too.

Dropping the sump, which you should be able to do with the engine in the frame if you remove the exhaust. (Pretty sure, but I've never had to do it.)

However, before I'd suspect the sump gasket, I'd suspect the o-ring on the oil level switch (located in the bottom of the sump,) the drain plug crush washer, or even oil "migrating" from as far away as the cam chain tensioner body-to-cylinders gasket. I had a leak there on my '81 and it migrated all over the place looking for a low point from which to drip.

On this bike it could be any damn thing. I've been finding random bolts loosened all over the place.
