I've searched and searched for the write-up on going thru the instrument cluster with LED upgrades WITH pictures and can't find the post, so if someone could send me a link, that would be great ! :D

I bought 2 white LED's and I hope they are the right "brightness", but I'm thinking I should have bought red - should I stop and get some known good red ones??

I had some rust on the black metal piece behind the glass. Man was that hard to remove - you have to cut then break into pieces a glued plastic retainer WITHOUT ruining the metal piece.

The speedo bearings will get a shot of oil while I'm in here. I also painted out the "55" which had turned into a white box. Info on gluing back together - what's the "wrong" glue? I'd hate to mess up on the way back together.

    I had posted a writeup under the FAQ forum: http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... flash.html

No pictures there anymore, though, but I can send them to you if you need them. You don't really need them for instrument cluster LED's, though. It's the stop/brake and turn signal lamps that require more invasive work.

The instrument cluster lamp sockets just pull out from the bottom once you've removed the bottom cover. For the two white backlight lamps you should get LEDs that shine out the sides and tops, like these (http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/ ... D-xHP5.htm). For the colored indicator lamps, the basic single-LED lamps are fine. I went with four-LED ones, and they were actually much too bright. Use green for Neutral, Red for warning, Amber for the turn signals, and Blue for high beam.

Thanks SQLGuy - I guess I don't really need pictures.
I just placed an order, including brake lights and red dash lights.

I need to know how to seal-up the lens so it doesn't leak.
Is there ANY chance on getting a brand new rubber gasket??
Was this assembed from the factory "compressed" in a jig??

The rust is gone - looks good in the "mock-up"

I used the 5-red LED replacements for the 2 general gauge illumination in my Atari. Find MetalBob's write-up on his 750 Maxim in the Modified section.

I had my atari apart a couple months ago. I wanted to paint that metal framing cause it's rusted.

Found what a pain in the @#$ it was going to be to get it out and decided against pulling it lol.

Didn't want to break any 30 year old parts either :)

oops  well here's the "can-o-worms" shot

and the mock-up with finished paint

I may have to blend some paint and re-do the "55" to make it totally invisible

Interesting that your tach still has red but the speedo doesn't anymore. Both mine are totally faded.

Last time I had mine open, I repainted the needles with some DayGlo orange paint. Looked really good for a few months, but the color didn't last.
