Could someone tell me if I should change the secondary gear oil after my bike has sat since 1995, or if it is even possible to do?

I would change it l assume you refer to the oil in the shaft drive hub.

when you change the gear oil in the axle hub make sure the filler plug comes out first. its at the 3:00 position. if it wont come out you do not want to have drained it already.

    then remove the drain plug

if you are talking about the second drain on side of motor . put the tool down and back away that port will just break off on you. it is not needed to be drained. it is the same oil that you drain out the bottom drain if it bothers you that it is still in there just redrain oil from bottom sooner than spec after it is all mixed together.

Just so I am sure what you are saying XJ550 there two drain plugs on these engines? I know about the front one under the oil filter housing and I remember k-moe saying something about another one that could break off under the exhaust collector. But it is ok to take the plug out of the driveshaft hub to drain it or do they break? Just want to clarify thanks.

I changed that one, just because it had been sitting for so long, and did as you suggested. Where the boot is over the gear by the kick stand, it has a little old oil on it. Is that where the secondary drain is?

I have a XJ 650 Maxim. I had heard about a secondary gear. Just want to make sure it will be ready when everything is done.

I was not sure either about the secondary plug I think it is. Anyway I have the 900f and I will drain the old oil out of the driveshaft hub and replenish it with fresh oil. The filler plug is also a level plug so keep your bike on the centre stand if changing the oil.

Glen when you say the secondary gear do you mean the middle drive gear, that is lubricated with engine oil. The middle drive gear assembly connects the gearbox to the drive shaft.

yes there is a second oil drain we just had a post about it in the past week where poster confused the side drain with the full drain on bottom and was not getting any oil out the side drain. it is an allen head.

yes the drain plug comes out never had the drain plug be seized but if fill plug is siezed you are screwed if you drain the gear oil out and can not refill it

Yes doesn't need any maintenance just the engine oil change at the recommended intervals. Only remove the drain plug below the oil filter housing when changing the oil.

I changed the oil and the filter. Just waiting for the throttle shaft seals to arrive. Then tires and brakes and lines. Hope it's good to go after that.

I know I'm replying to a four year old post but as far as that middle gear oil drain plug do as others have said. Do not touch. It holds so little oil I don't know why they even put a drain there. Since I currently am replacing the starter clutch (primary chain and guide too) on my Max here's a few pictures of the oil "reservoir".
