82 xj 750 rj turn signals work but won't self cancel.
flasher relay has been replace with over the counter flasher.
Did all tests out of Haynes manual for self canceler and found to be bad.
    Replaced self canceler unit.
Still won't self cancel. Could it be I need the exact replacement flasher or just a newer electronic one?

Its my understanding with a newer electronic flasher. U WILL lose the "auto" cancel on the bike..

So I assume that u DO need the exact replacement part. 2 have that function work..

Maybe someone else will chime in here..

I don't know if a shop by you may have an old unit left over, but I tried to order one two weeks ago, and Yamaha discontinued that part! I just replaced my flasher with a standard one, and now I just cancel the signals by hand. Hope this helps!

    Welcome HRM62 !

Do you have factory turn signals with 27 Watt bulbs, or cute little aftermarket units made in China?

The factory set-up only works with the correct total system "load".
This is a common, easy fix (replacing the flasher) but I think that we should all have the self cancelling system working.

The auto-cancel feature only works when you have the stock flasher unit I'm afraid. Aftermarket flashers don't work. There's a reed switch in the speedometer that tells the flasher unit when to cancel -- plain flashers don't have the ability.

I'm backing Altus up on this one HRM62, self canceler won't work with anything but the stock relay. Sorry about that. Did you save your old relay and canceler by chance? You can overhaul the old relay but I have yet to try to rebuild the canceler.

I have a 84 Honda V65 Magna with self canceling signals. I was told that the flasher had to be the exact model to make it work. I bought a later model automotive electronic flasher and was able to make it work.
My old one was unreliable and would flash sometimes but most of the time it would not. I love the electronic one. It did not hook up the same, instead of using all three wires I wound up using two and grounding another I think. I will have to look it up and see how it hooked it up. It works perfectly.
