I have a 1980 xj650 maxim. I need to install the cams today, I do not know where to line up match marks to ensure everything is good to go. Any input on this would be helpful as I do not have a manual or anything. Thanks.

    IIRC
    1. cylinder #1 set to TDC by ligning up the "T" on the pick up wheel with the timing marker
    2. Both Cams have a "dimple" on the center of the cams, line these up to the arrow on the center cam journal.
    3. gradually bolt down in an even pattern to half the final torque specs and then one time around to final spec.
    4. you can then start the process of lining up the gears with the bolt holes while keeping tension on the non tension side of the chain.
    5. The next steps depend on what type of tensioner you have. I think you have a manual one and I don't have experience with those.
    6. Make sure you give it a couple rotations of the engine and check the cam timing again to make sure its good and the chain doesn't skip.
