This may have already been asked but I couldn't find it anywhere in the forum search.

What kind of Shaft Drive Oil would you suggest or is it just regular gear oil? I use the Supertech SAE 80 Heavy Duty Gear Oil currently, but I just want to know if there is anything better out there.

Or if what I'm using now is actually hurting my shaft drive. 8O

The gear oil has to be rated GL-5, a.k.a. "hypoid gear oil".

the rear differential gears in the XJs (and many other shafties) are hypoid -- the teeth are curved, allowing them to engage quieter. the pressure between these teeth can be greater than straight gears, so the oil has to have higher shear strength to keep things lubricated at high speeds. Our local mechanic also says that hypoid design allows the driveshaft gear to be placed lower than the wheel axis, but I don't know whether it's relevant to XJs.

I don't know if there's a big difference between brands... As far as I can tell, if it's 80-weight GL-5, it should be good.
