I'v had my Maxim for a few years now and was told that the oil i put in the engine takes care of my shaft drive as well. I came across something earlier that made me think that that was not true, now i am worried that i have been neglecting to keep my shaft drive in good shape. So i guess my question is....

How do i oil my shaft drive and what do i use???

Engine oil is wrong. SAE 80 API GL-4 or SAE 80/90 Hypoid gear oil

Your manual has all the details on how to change out the drive oil and which is right (my 1982 XJ650 Maxim uses SAE 80W GL 4 Hypoid oil).

Max also has a video. Bike's different but still a good primer. It's not a difficult task. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNlG9SNaMvY

Yep - SAE 80/90 Hypoid gear oil. Drain plug on bottom & fill plug on top. It's a gravity thing I think.

Not to nit-pick, but the vent is on top, the fill is middle-rear.
You fill until you can fill no more, about 225 CC's or so.
Change fluid every other year - Marine lower unit lube works fine.
