I don't want to go with forward controls but I want to lose this horrible design they call a shifter have any of you gurus on here done a shifter swap on there bikes? Maybe one that comes rite of the shifter shaft itself

Slow down. What problems are you having with shifting? The XJ transmission shifts very smoothly unless somthing is worn-out, broken, or th clutch isn't adjusted properly (first-gear clunk).

If you swap to a shift lever that mounts directly to the shift shaft you will have a reversed shift pattern (one up, four down).

Just gonna take a shot in the dark and guess that the shift linkage has already been flipped and he is not aware that the 750 shifter uses the front shaft which reverses the shift pattern for operation.

The linkage on the shaft should point up.

All the bikes I've ridden have been 1 down 4 up and this shift pattern is 1 up 4 down its been this way since I've bought the bike but from what I've just read I wasn't aware of it being able to be swapped I don't have any actual trouble with the shifter just the pattern i m so usto the normal shift pattern every once in a while I find myself downshifting instead of upshifting because it's backwards

you shift patern is incorrectsome of the xj's have linkage so the shift lever sits back from the shifter rod (750) or forward of it(650 seca).
    or as stated by MiGhost
    fix it

haynes manual does not mention other 750 style

and of course not all 650's have this linkage but have the conventional style. G,H, LH, and J

see page 180 of the haynes manual

My xj750 maxim shift pattern was also backwards when I got it. I just flipped the linkage back the correct way. Easy fix

Anyone who rides really hard (or just wants to be a d!¢k) will filp the shift pattern so that upshifting can happen while leaned over without the risk of pinching your boot.

As always guys I appreciate the info I actually got in contact with the guy I bought it from and he said he forgot to tell me about being able to swap it around he said he had it that way to make it more of a drag style shift pattern....

Race pattern. Not usually used on drag bikes unless the rider also does road-races.
