Here is the stupid question of the day. (82 xj750) What is the proper rpm for shifting? I had been shifting around 4500 and that "sounded" right. Lately I have been trying around 5k because of all the trottle I have and the bike seems to be performing great. What, if anything, is ideal. Obviously I am not trying to break any land speed records I just want to get as many miles as I can out of this bike. It has to last a long time. Any help would be appreciated.

Shifting when it feels right ... and, shifting when it sounds right works.

When you're ridin' along ... it's nice to be in the lower part of the power band.
So, keeping-it above 28-hundred is good for it ...

The tach has a pretty broad area of black to try and keep it within.
An occasional visit to the painted area feels good every now and then.

If you're paranoid about "Blowing-it-up" ... DYNA Industries makes a real nice Rev-Limiter!

My 650 runs nice so long as I shift about 3K or higher.

Lots of fun and kick ass accelleration if I shift at 6K or higher.

Gas mileage goes to hell fast when winding 'er out.

Want to hear something funny? When I am riding the Ninja 250, I don't shift until at least 9,000 rpms. If am really getting on it, I shift at 14,000........my Z/28 can outrun it though. :)

Only steers and queers come from Texas. And you don’t look much like a steer to me so that kinda narrows it down.

Shifting at 3k? Maybe that's another reason I never got the fuel milage others did!

I don't think I've shifted before 6k that often, and I know I've shifted over 8k a few times. The bike was made to whistle, let her rip ;)

Re: the 250. Another bike that was made to rev, she likes it that way. I've got a 600 right now, she likes to rev, but unlike the 250 or the xj she has to be shifted early to keep the speed down. :-/
