Hi, after some advice on where to get shorter than standard rear shocks for my XJ 650 83 mod. Would like to drop the rear by 2" or so.
    cheers

Suzuki Savage shocks is often opted for.
Honda Rebel fits as well, but is a small 250cc bike.
Some Sportster shocks are an option, but obviously Harley spare parts are more costly than the Savage...

Where to get them? I'm from Europe, can't help you on that...

If you do find some shocks that are 2" shorter, be sure to check that your swingarm can freely move up as high as the shorter shocks will allow without binding the U joint, and the wheel doesn't hit anything (like the inside of fender) when it does so.

Just order a set of Progressives for your bike in a shorter length.

BigFitz - do those shorter shocks also have travel that is equally shorter? Seems like if not, you run the risk of blowing money on something that lets the swingarm go higher than it should.

I have HD Sportster Shocks on mine, don't think I weight enough to use all the travel.
