I am thinking of buying another 1982 xj650 on craigslist. The author states "the bike has second gear issues - Just don't push it too hard and it is fine"

Is this kind of problem fixable? Yes I know everything is fixable, but would it scare you experts away?? I'm asking because the price is right, might even be worth it just for parts?? He says it runs "great" otherwise......

    what do you guys think??

From what I've read, it's a bent shift fork, or, the place where the "dog" contacts the gear is rounded. I bought my first 900 that way, and paid to have it fixed.

It all comes down to price, and what are you going to do with another 650 ?? (Plan? - there aint no plan!) :p

Does that fork issue also cause slipping in 2nd gear? My bike, if you are hard on the throttle in 2nd it will slip until you let off the gas and then get back on it, and then it's fine, 2nd gear is the only gear it does it in. (I don't normally drive like that, just had seen it the one or two times I have done it).

Normal driving it's fine, never had any issues with shifting, slipping, etc. Just curious if mine may have the same issue.

slipping is the clutch. Worn out - wrong oil - cable adjusted wrong.

On the 2nd gear problem, it "Pops" back into neutral - RPMs go soaring.
    I developed a habit of a double-shift to 3rd.

Ah ok, cool. Thanks, just wanted to make sure I wasn't chasing the wrong problem. Rebuilding the clutch is one of my things to do.

guess the bad one, this popped out of second maybe 12 times that i know of. the gear that ate it was a brownish blue color, the jagged black stuff is melted steel. as the drive dogs wear and round off they come out of engagement and the gear pushes into the shift forks, they have no where to go
